Summer Financial Aid

Financial aid for the Summer is limited to only Federal aid – Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Loans. Due to limitations on eligibility for these programs, not all students are eligible for financial assistance during the Summer. If you meet eligibility criteria, your initial Summer aid offer will generally be based on half-time enrollment (6 credits).

NOTE: Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during any semester will count towards your 600% Pell Grant Lifetime Limit. For more information, please visit Federal Student Aid site for information about the Federal Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used (PLEU).

First-time student loan borrower for Summer:

The chart below indicates the student loan limits (for Direct Loans) that a student can borrow within one academic year. Leeward Community College uses Summer as a trailer for the current academic year. For example, our academic year includes Fall, Spring and Summer.

Example #1 (possible loan eligibility): A dependent, first-year student was offered $3,500 in student loans for the previous Fall and/or Spring semesters. For Summer, as long as the student meets aid eligibility requirements and is enrolled for 6 applicable credits, they can be eligible for $2,000 in student loans for Summer because the student has an academic year loan limit of $5,500 and did not borrow the maximum $5,500 in the previous Fall and/or Spring semesters.

Example #2 (no loan eligibility): A dependent, first-year student was offered $5,500 in student loans for the previous Fall and/or Spring semesters. For Summer, the student is not eligible for Federal Direct Loans because the student already borrowed their annual loan limit of $5,500.

Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Annual Loan Limits

CLASS LEVEL Dependent Student
(Subsidized & Unsubsidized)
Independent Student
(Subsidized & Unsubsidized)

Sophomore (30 + credits earned) $6,500 $10,500 $4,500

For more information about academic year loan limits, please visit the Federal Student Aid site.

Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is available to the parent(s) of classified dependent students who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) to help pay the cost of their educational expenses. PLUS loans can help pay for education expenses not covered by other financial aid. These loans are typically awarded to students who do not demonstrate financial need or may be used to supplement a Federal Direct Stafford loan. Parents are expected to begin making payments after the loan is fully disbursed, unless a deferment is requested.

When will I receive my Summer financial aid offer?

Once your 2024-2025 FAFSA application is complete, you have registered for Summer course(s), and you completed the Summer Financial Aid Survey (for Continuing Leeward CC students only), the review process will take anywhere between 2-3 weeks. Initial aid offers will start sometime in April/May. Please check your hawaii.edu email account for updates.

What if I am enrolled for more than 6 credits?

Summer Financial Aid Offers is based on 6-credit enrollment. If you are enrolled for more than 6 credits, please email our office at lccfao@hawaii.edu. Include your UH Student ID Number and let us know the exact number of credits that you are enrolled for in Summer and would like to request a re-evaluation of aid due to the increase in credits.

At the time of the Summer enrollment freeze date (June 17, 2025), our office will automatically review your aid offer and make any necessary adjustments to reflect your actual financial aid enrollment.

Note: You must be sure to remain in your course(s) and to actively attend and participate in your course(s). Withdrawals and/or Non-Participation may result in the reduction or cancellation of aid that was already offered to you.

What happens if I change my enrollment or withdraw from my Summer courses?

Any changes in your enrollment may result in the recalculation of your aid offer, which could lead to repayment of funds.

Complete Withdrawal

A complete withdrawal (including semesters where a student did not officially withdraw from courses but received all non-passing grades), can affect a student’s current financial aid (recalculation of aid and possible repayment of aid), eligibility for future aid, as well as personal finances (repayment of aid already disbursed). Federal regulations require Title IV financial aid to be offered under the assumption that a student will attend Leeward Community College for the entire period in which federal aid was offered.

For more information, please refer to Leeward Community College’s Return to Title IV Policy.

Federal Aid Requirements

Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Student Loan recalculations apply to Summer courses in the same way they do in the regular academic year. This means that students must begin (and maintain) their attendance in all courses for which they receive a Federal Pell Grant or Federal Student Loan payment.

Leeward Community College’s Summer financial aid enrollment freeze date is June 17, 2025 and applies to the Federal Pell Grant program only. Financial aid enrollment will be frozen as of this date and aid will be based on this enrollment level only and cannot be increased if students enroll for courses after this date.

For more information, please visit Leeward Community College’s website and click on the Disbursement Policy tab and scroll down and look for the section labeled “Enrollment Level and Enrollment Level Census Date.”

When will my financial aid disburse?

Federal Pell Grant Disbursement

Generally, Summer Pell Grant offers will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction for the earliest session in which you are enrolled, as long as no changes to your enrollment have occurred (changes in your registration). You may view the status of the disbursement by checking your MyUH Services account (click on “View My Student Account”).

Example #1: A student is enrolled for a total of 6 credits – 3 credits for Summer Session 1 and 3 credits for Summer Session 2 and has been offered aid for this enrollment level. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level in both Summer Sessions at the time of disbursement, the Federal Pell Grant offer will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction for the earliest session they are enrolled in, which is Summer Session 1.

Example #2: A student is enrolled in 6 credits for only Summer Session 2 and has been offered aid for this enrollment – 6 credits. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level in Summer Session 2 at the time of disbursement, the Federal Pell Grant offer will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction of Summer Session 2, since that is the only session the student is enrolled in.

Federal Direct Loan (Subsidized/Unsubsidized) Disbursement

Generally, Federal Direct Loan offers will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction for the session in which you are enrolled in. Loan disbursement requires that students be enrolled in a minimum of 6 applicable credits and the loan process also needs to be completed (see information below).

If you are a brand-new Leeward Community College student for Summer, your Federal Direct Loan offer must be disbursed in two equal disbursements. As long as all eligibility criteria is met at the time of disbursement, the first disbursement will be sometime during the first week of instruction for the earliest session in which the student is enrolled in. The second disbursement will be at the midpoint of the Summer term, July 7, 2025. In addition, there may be delayed disbursements for brand new, first-time freshman student loan borrowers. Please see the examples below.

Example #1 (continuing Leeward Community College loan borrowers): A student is enrolled for a total of 6 credits – 3 credits for Summer Session 1 and 3 credits for Summer Session 2 and has been offered aid for this enrollment level. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level in both Summer Sessions at the time of disbursement, the Federal Direct Loan offer will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction for the earliest session they are enrolled in, which is Summer Session 1.

Example #2 (continuing Leeward Community College loan borrowers): A student is enrolled in 6 credits for only Summer Session 2 and has been offered aid for this enrollment – 6 credits. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level in Summer Session 2 at the time of disbursement, the Federal Direct Loan offer will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction of Summer Session 2, since that is the only session the student is enrolled in.

Example #3 (brand new Leeward Community College student in the Summer): A brand new Leeward Community College student (Summer 2025 only student) is enrolled for a total of 6 credits – 3 credits in Summer Session 1 and 3 credits in Summer Session 2 and has been offered a Federal Direct Loan for this enrollment level. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level for both Summer Sessions at the time of disbursement, the INITIAL disbursement of the Federal Direct Loan offer will disburse sometime during the first week of instruction for the earliest session they are enrolled in, which is Summer Session 1. The second loan disbursement will be made during the midpoint of the Summer Session, July 7, 2025

  • For Summer only student loan borrowers, Federal regulation states that the Financial Aid Office must disburse loan offers in two equal disbursements within the entire Summer Session.
  • For first-time freshman borrowers in the Summer who have NOT borrowed a student loan before, the first disbursement of your loan offer will be on a delayed schedule, per Federal regulations. Please see the section below regarding first-time freshman borrowers for more detailed information.

Example #4 (brand new Leeward Community College student in the Summer): A brand new Leeward Community College student (Summer 2025 only student) is enrolled for a total of 6 credits in only Summer Session 2 and has been offered a Federal Direct Loan. As long as the student maintains this enrollment level in Summer Session 2, the Federal Direct Loan offer will be disbursed (in its entirety but in two separate disbursements) sometime during the first week of instruction for Summer Session 2. The reason for this is because the midpoint of the Summer term (July 7, 2025) is during the first week of instruction for Summer Session 2, so there is no need to have a delayed second disbursement.

  • For first-time freshman borrowers in the Summer who have NOT borrowed a student loan before, the first disbursement of your loan offer will be on a delayed schedule, per Federal regulations. Please see the section below regarding first-time freshman borrowers for more detailed information.

If you are a first-time freshman (in the Summer) and have NOT borrowed a student loan before, the first disbursement of your loan will be on a delayed disbursement (by federal regulation). This means that we are not able to disburse the first disbursement of your loan until 30 days AFTER the first day of the Summer session you are enrolled in.

For more information about financial aid disbursements, please visit our website and click on the Disbursement Policy

NOTE: If you have been offered a student loan for Summer, please keep in mind that in order for your loan to disburse, you must complete the following:

I received Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Student Loans in Fall and Spring but was not offered a student loan for Summer. Why?

Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loans are offered based on your remaining academic year loan eligibility. This means that loans received during the previous Fall/Spring semesters are taken into account when reviewing loan eligibility for Summer. The annual/academic year loan limits are determined by the U.S. Department of Education.

Example: A dependent, first-year student was offered $5,500 in student loans for the previous Fall and/or Spring semesters. For Summer, the student is not eligible for Federal Direct Loans because the student already borrowed their annual loan limit of $5,500.

For more information about academic year loan limits, please visit the Federal Student Aid site.

Students who do not qualify for the Federal Direct Student Loans (Subsidized/Unsubsidized) or the Parent PLUS Loan may explore alternative/private loans to help with Summer costs. For more information, please visit our website and click on the Alternative Loan tab.

Am I eligible for Summer aid if I am not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements?

If you are currently NOT meeting our SAP requirements, then you are NOT eligible for Summer aid. You will be notified by email (to your Hawaii.edu email account) if you do not meet the SAP requirements. You may appeal this status if you experienced extenuating circumstances that prevented you from meeting the SAP requirements by completing the SAP Appeal form.

For more information, please visit our website and click on the Satisfactory Academic Progress tab (scroll and look for the section labeled, “Appeal Process”).

Can I receive Summer financial aid as a non-degree seeking student?

Non-degree seeking students are NOT eligible for financial aid.

For more information, please visit our website and review the Eligibility Requirements.

What if I am not eligible for Federal aid?

Alternative/Private educational loans are credit-based loans that require a credit check and, generally, a co-signer. They are not part of the Federal Direct Loan Program.

The loan period for Summer 2025 private loans is May 27, 2025, to August 14, 2025.

For more information, please visit our website and click on the Alternative Loan tab.

Can I appeal my Summer financial aid offer?
