Ability to Benefit (ATB)

The Ability to Benefit (ATB) requirement has been placed on your account because you
either did not answer the high school completion question on the FAFSA or you
indicated that you did not graduate from high school. If you have earned your high
school diploma, GED or a state-recognized equivalent, you must correct your FAFSA.

Please follow the instructions below.

  • Log onto your account at StudentAid.gov.
  • Navigate to either the “Confirm Your High School” page or the “Student Financials” page
and click on the “Previous” button.
  • Make the necessary corrections to include that you did graduate from high school (or
earned a GED or state-equivalent) and answer the questions.
  • Submit the corrections.

Ability to Benefit (ATB)

In order to qualify for Title IV student financial aid, students must have earned their high school
diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalent.

Ability to Benefit allows students without a high school diploma, GED or state-recognized
equivalency to receive Title IV student financial aid. If the student was enrolled in an eligible
program prior to July 1, 2012, the student may meet the ATB criteria to be eligible for Title IV
student financial aid by:

  • Passing an approved ability-to-benefit test with satisfactory scores.
  • Completed 6 credits of coursework applicable towards a degree or certificate.

For students who met the ATB criteria (prior to July 1, 2012 and do not have a high school
diploma, GED or the state-recognized equivalent), please complete the ATB Form.

Students who did not earn a high school diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalent and do
NOT meet any of the ATB alternatives listed above are NOT eligible to receive Title IV student
financial aid. These students will need to go through the process of earning a GED or state-
recognized equivalent certification.

Please contact the Leeward CC Financial Aid Office if you have any questions.
