Hikaʻalani Presents: Nānā i ke Kumu
Hikaʻalani Presents: Nānā i ke Kumu
Kahiko Concert: 2pm
Auana Concert: 6pm
These are back-to-back hula concerts, the first kahiko, the second ʻauana, both old school, both tradition-steeped and tradition-steered, both committed to the dictum “Nānā i ke Kumu – Look to the Source,” and both meant to honor the legacy of kumu hula Maiki Aiu Lake as it is upheld today by Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima. The first concert, Volume 1, features the recent ʻūniki ʻailolo graduates of the hālau and a repertoire of oli and hula that spans more than seven generations of instruction. The second concert, Volume 2, with music by the inimitable Keauhou, celebrates a Maiki-influenced genealogy of modern hula that begins with “Iā ʻOe e ka Lā,” includes “Pua Ahihi” and “Pua Lililehua,” and continues today in our own mele for our Kailua home.
General – $45
Student/Child – $25
